The Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) is the most popular shrimp species among aquarists. This species is particularly associated with Takashi Amano, a Japanese aquarist, photographer, and founder of ADA, who first introduced shrimp as effective algae eaters in aquariums.

The relatively unremarkable-looking shrimp owes its exceptional popularity to its tireless algae consumption. If enough shrimp are introduced to the aquarium, they can work wonders in curbing an algae invasion in just a few days. However, it is necessary to pair them with fish that do not pose a threat to the shrimp. Otherwise, they will just hide in some corner and not do any noticeable cleaning.

Interestingly, when shrimp are placed in their new home, they immediately start cleaning, but then disappear by the next day. During this time, they can become "invisible" for several days before re-emerging.

Size and Appearance: The Amano shrimp typically grows to 3-5 cm long and has a translucent, grayish body with distinctive dark stripes. These stripes help the shrimp blend into their environment and provide natural protection against predators.

Behavior and Keeping: Caridina multidentata is known for its active and peaceful nature, making it ideal for community aquariums. It is beneficial in the fight against algae, as it diligently feeds on algae that settle on the aquarium glass, decorations, and plants.

Care: Amano shrimp do not require special care but prefer clean, oxygen-rich water and stable water parameters. They thrive in water with medium hardness and a slightly acidic or neutral pH. The aquarium must have enough hiding places, such as live plants, roots, or special shrimp decorations.
