The Blue Dream shrimp (Neocaridina davidi var. Blue) is an impressive blue variant of the famous Red cherry shrimp. Its vibrant blue color makes it an exceptional and eye-catching phenomenon in the aquarium.
Similar to cherry shrimp, it is easy to keep and does not require specific water parameters, so it can thrive even in tap water. However, it is important not to keep it together with other Neocaridina heteropoda variants, as mixing can result in paler offspring. Like all shrimp, well-filtered water is essential for good health.
The Blue Dream shrimp females are larger and have a more rounded belly than the males. Breeding them is easy; the fertilized females can carry 20-25 eggs on their belly, and the tiny shrimps hatch within a week. The young become sexually mature at around 4 months of age.
This shrimp species is ideal for an aquarium of at least 20 liters. It is recommended to keep 10-12 shrimp in a 30-liter aquarium. The aquarium should be densely planted with plants, using floating plants on the water's surface to soften the intensity of the lighting. A dark substrate, such as Amazonia, highlights the shrimp's color.
Keep the water temperature between 22-28 °C and the pH between 6-8. Water hardness is not critical. Blue Dream shrimps eat shrimp as well as blanched spinach and other vegetables. Their expected lifespan is 1-2 years, during which time they will enhance the aquarium with their eye-catching colors.
